January is Radon Action Month, and the Department of Environmental Protection PA Childcare Radon Testing Program is offering one free radon test kit while supplies last to any childcare facility in Pennsylvania to test their radon levels.
Radon is a radioactive gas that occurs naturally in the soil and can enter buildings through cracks in the foundation and other openings. Pennsylvania is especially prone to high radon levels because of our geology and soils. Fortunately, it is easy to test for high radon levels and reduce them if they are found.
Long-term radon exposure can cause lung cancer and is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States, as well as the leading cause of lung cancer in nonsmokers.
The PA Childcare Radon Testing Program encourages childcare facilities to test for radon to ensure children and staff have a safe and healthy environment.
Childcare facilities interested in testing kits can use the form and send an email Stacy Sowers at stsowers@pa.gov or contact by phone at 717-787-1454, stating their interest in the Childcare Radon Testing Program. Radon testing kits are also available at most hardware stores costing between $20-$30.
